Bonnie has a very unusual and interesting story, having grown up in a more particular culture of the Asian community, trying to "fit in" with the typical American community, trying to be like everyone else. It took her a long journey with God, but looking back she can see how He was shaping her special beauty and gifting, so that now she could write her story and reach out to help other lonely people who feel like misfits. It seems to be epidemic in America to feel like one doesn't "belong." This book helps one reframe one's story to see it differently, and to see the special unique way one is created to assuage the loneliness of the world. I finished this book in one day, I couldn't put it down! Bonnie's writing has a way to make you feel seen even as she tells her own story. This book made me reflect on my own life and how God has been with me throughout. The reflection questions are on-point. We follow her from the time she was a teeny little girl up to being a wife and mother. She had a very tough early life, and has a wonderful experience discovering Jesus, which changes the way she looked back at her story. The unique way she includes letters to her younger self, applicable quotes from the Bible, and teaches the reader a few Chinese traditions at the end of each chapter, adds another layer to the book. Emotions run high while reading this, and the wonder of how she reached the point where she felt capable of writing this story is awe-inspiring. I loved it, and will need to read it again! A Must Read!! : I love the format Bonnie Gray uses to share her story: she tells a portion of her life's experience, then shares her thoughts about it in a letter written to her younger self, followed by 3 questions to stimulate your own reflections and to encourage open discussion an a group setting. Easy reading, deep meaning, wonderful book. I bought one for myself and another for a friend whose life was similar to Bonnie's in childhood and even adulthood.
